A newsgroup is like an electronic bulletin board or messaging system. Usenet has thousands and thousands of newsgroups and millions of users. SFF Net is a private, non-propagated news server (that means its newsgroups are not available on Usenet, and Usenet newsgroups are not available on SFF Net) with hundreds of newsgroups and hundreds of users: a much cosier place than Usenet. It is an online community for people who like to read, write, and talk about genre fiction. SFF Net public newsgroups are available to everyone, not just to members of SFF Net and/or SFWA. Private newsgroups are available only to members. If you are a SFWA member, you need only to fill out the form to obtain your free SFF Net membership. (If you are not (yet?) a SFWA member but enjoy reading, writing, and discussing genre fiction, you might like to join SFF Net, where you will find an online community of people who share your interests.) Among the private newsgroups on SFF Net are several private SFWA newsgroups where no one who is not a SFWA member can either read or post. Every SFWA member who can get online can get access to these groups by signing up for the free SFF Net membership. Once SFWA has validated your application and SFF Net has set up your account, SFF Net will send email with logon instructions. Once you have your membership ID and password, you can read the SFF Net/SFWA newsgroups via your browser and Greyware's Webnews (this is particularly useful for Web TV or Lynx-users). Or you can use your browser's built-in newsreader, or download a freeware or shareware newsreader. SFF Net maintains a list of them, complete with download links and setup instructions. If you have difficulty finding or using the newsgroups, please see whether there's a solution on the newsgroup FAQ page.
