I'm glad you enjoyed the article, Ellen! Style sheets are an important part of copyediting, and authors can benefit from them, too.

I understand your reasoning, Johne, but in publishing, what I describe is definitely called a style sheet. The publisher will always ask for one from the copyeditor.

In my day job as a technical writer, I use both style sheets and style guides, and context is key to keeping them straight.

I take what you describe here as the latter, 'a set of standards for design and writing of documents.' When I see 'style sheet,' I think of software that provides 'a form of separation of presentation and content in desktop publishing programs that store and apply formatting to text.' (And then there's the web flavor of style sheets which is, itself, further distinct.)

I mention all of this not to quibble but to raise awareness and point out that the term 'style sheet' means different things in different contexts.

Deanna,
Wonderful article. I have taught grammar and punctuation at the New School for more than 10 years and hammer into my student's heads this attitude. I agree wholeheartedly with Teresa Nielsen Hayden and you about CMS "grammar rules" and fiction. And as I wrote for my grammar blog <a> http://bit.ly/4rffLF on Barnes and Noble.com, John Benbow was right when he wrote in 1937, "If you take hyphens seriously, you will surely go mad."
