There is a suggestion that people who trawl the net for the free book were never going to buy it anyway, and perhaps if they do become fans they will buy future works. Giving it away free yourself may mean that people who would have bought the book (and already a fan) now will not buy it. This would appear to be a loss for the author.

Chris, good luck with it! If you want to convert to other formats, the Calibre program is good for that. I've been experimenting with bittorrent distribution and in particular a "Pay as you like it" model based on a pricing survey ( http://critters.org/surv ) that suggests people will pay more if given the choice than if forced into a specific price point.

Also, I've been playing with Smashwords.com -- you might check them out too. They convert a word .doc file into all popular ebook formats and let you control the pricing, including free and reader-chosen.
