They all take the phrase, "Write What You Know" too literally. I love that phrase because it stopped me from attempting to write about things I didn't know. I always felt a need to write general novels about real life. Fiction, but without magic or anything cool like monsters.

Until I heard the phrase, "Write What You Know." What I know, is fantasy. Magic and dragons. Long quests. Weapons, sword fighting styles. War and domination. That's what I know, and so that's what I write.

I don't think the 'know' is supposed to be literal. It's 'know' as in what you feel comfortable writing about. What is it that YOU know when you write.
