That was helpful advice. I am a blogger/ reviewer with a background in marketing. I am using a marketing strategy where the author and the reviewer use my blog to post their review like a book of the month. It seems to be working, because we have all seen an increase in our hits and comments.
If I offer my services free and they come back it is with the knowledge they will pay me for my services and time. I don't happen to believe that I should do all this work-for free-to get the word out for a promotional campaign. The traditional publisher would take a percentage of your gross or net to PR your book plus a per centage(15%) for the life of the book. In some cses first rights.
I disagree with most of what you said except for one thing, the book market is saturated with books, over 950,000 out in one year(2010), due to indie publishing.
Mailings work if they are not abused. I have had people thank me and now they are familiar with me and my book recommends/picks, so I'm not an imposition, I am an advisor for a good summer/ winter read. Bloggers and Book Reviewers have a positive impact on PR and if we do extra we deserve to get paid.
Check out my blogs: www.kidsmartbooks.blogspot.com/ or www.writestuff-writenow.blogspot.com/. I do a thorough job emphasis on job.

I wish more new authors going the self-published route would read this and take heed! With the internet and its resources, one merely needs to spend the time to take advantage of the benefits. One case is point is publishers charging authors to access the "See Inside" feature on Amazon. Authors can do that for free by themselves!

Very good info. It's amazing that anyone would pay tons of money for a service they can get for little to no upfront fees (like reviews). Unfortunately, newbie authors fall for the nonsense. A little research and networking goes a long way.
