So far I've been mostly opening them publicly and have enjoyed meeting writers I don't know. Since no one can see my screen and we largely ignore each other, it doesn't seem any different from not knowing the other people in a coffee shop.

You can also set up a date and invite a specific group of people. Only those invited would be able to see the hangout. I've done this occasionally, but so far prefer the public ones.

Mary Robinette, how private are these "hangouts"? When you create one, can anybody join, or do they have to be invited by you (the hangout creator)? How do you make sure that only the people you want included will know about it?

It just seems to me that writers will want to know whom they are "hanging out" with, especially when they are writing.
