Visiting with David Hartwell is always an interesting experience. I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with him last year at Reconstruction/NASFiC10, and as we loaded books he offered one of the best snippets of advice I've ever received: "Master four thousand words, and you'll be able to sell everything you can write."

Of course, I haven't "mastered" anything yet (and I am still a long way from doing so!), but bearing those words in mind did help me to start looking at short fiction through a more efficient lens.
