Junior SF seems to go one of two ways: The first is zany and over-the-top: e.g. kids stealing a spaceship and shooting down the alien mothership because the adults are all to dumb to do it themselves. These are similar to kids' movies like Jimmy Neutron.
The second is the more realistic type - like adult SF written for kids, with a younger protagonist and more plausible events.

There's nothing wrong with either type - if it gets kids reading it has my vote - but the former is allowed more leeway when it comes to physics & vocab & worldbuilding. When the author is aiming for over-the-top action you can forgive a loud explosion in space.

I agreed with what you said about young adult readers. You need to slowly build the story and characters or the readers will loose interest. Aka you need to "harry potter it." Style doesn't matter as much as flow does to young readers.
