I came across this just yesterday, and at first it sounded intriguing. But further examination made me change my mind. As you point out, they make it sound enticing but I suspect actual revenues will be minimal.

This may be a new tool for new authors wanting to gain exposure, for established authors, stick to the free samples of books to give readers a taste of your work.

I just made the first Clockwork Phoenix anthology available for Kindle, and as I interpreted the fine print, the very fact that I have one-time non-exclusive reprint rights to the stories in the books (meaning the authors can publish their stories other places if they want) meant my book would not be eligible. Pretty Draconian there.

I got an email from Amazon this morning about this program. It didn't pass the smell test. The formula bothered me-- how much do you get if your ebook is only borrowed 10 times? Amazon has a habit of not paying out anything until a certain dollar amount is reached (which I understand, but it can be frustrating). The exclusivity clause bothered me as well. In the end, I couldn't see any advantage to the program other than the possibility of promotion. I decided to pass.
