The cost is truly science fiction-worthy.

Dean Wesley Smith talks about doing something similar to this with widely available scratch-off gift cards (check his blog out at http://www.deanwesleysmith.com/?p=4154). When I looked into it by Googling for scratch cards, the only hang up seemed to be that you had to order lost in the 100′s or 1,000′s…maybe not a problem for more prolific authors. :)
