Thank you very much for your article, I tend to find myself a bit lost, I love writing, yet have no guidance on the subject. The short story eludes me in a sense; as I always think to far ahead, I see patterns and ideas just flow, within minutes of writing I have a story in my head that just will not fit in a few pages.

Also I would love to find a good writer's group; any suggestions?

Ultimately thank you for your advice it seems like sound advice.

Actually, there are a lot of dangers in RPGs for writers, especially if you are the DM. Cutting off your characters' options in a story is a good thing -- you don't want your readers wondering why they didn't opt for a different option. And if you focus on a main character in a game, your players will justly revolt.

And a number more. It teaches skills you can use, and bad habits you have to break. (And vice versa for going from writing to DM'ing, too.)

Thank you for this post! I have also come to the conclusion that short stories are a natural step toward writing longer pieces. It also allows me to try different things without committing to 5 months of writing. Instead I can use a few days or a week to try something new, different POV, different style, voice, etc. It helps a lot. I hope I will be able to publish some too, but that's a different ball game.

Thank you!
