Elizabeth Wein celebrated the release of her fifth novel for young people, The Empty Kingdom, on 17 April 2008 with a virtual launch party on her LiveJournal blog. The Empty Kingdom is the second half of a two-part sequence called The Mark of Solomon; the first part, The Lion Hunter, has been shortlisted for the Andre Norton Award and appeared on the 2007 best-of-the-year lists in both School Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews. Both books are published by Viking Children's Books in New York.
Elizabeth's books blend Arthurian legend with the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. In a tribute to the African setting of the books, Elizabeth's on-line launch showcases an organization called Ethiopia Reads (www.ethiopiareads.org). Ethiopia Reads works to put books in the hands of Ethiopian children, describing its mission as "…to build a reading culture in Ethiopia by connecting children with books. We do this by planting libraries for children, publishing books in English as well as local Ethiopian languages, and training teachers and librarians to cultivate a love of reading among children."
The release date for The Empty Kingdom is past, but the on-line party goes on indefinitely. Elizabeth invites all interested readers and writers stop by at her blog to comment, recommend their own writing, read an excerpt from her new book, and generally join the festivities.
