1995 Nebula Awards WeekendThis year's Nebula Awards ceremony will be held aboard the eelgant Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, April 26-28. The hotel is right across the bay from downtown Long Beach, and at the south end of the Long Beach Freeway. There are bars and restaurants aboard the ship. Right across the bridge, available by free tram, is Pine Avenue, site of first class restaurants and trendy coffee houses. Rooms range from $71 to $91, plus 12% tax. The speaker at the banquet will be Bruce Murray of NASA, and the toastmaster, longtime SFWA member George Alec Effinger. This year we will continue what we hope will beocme a SFWA tradition, by inviting Wilson Tucker to be our guest as this year's Writer Emeritus, in recognition of his contribution to the field of science fiction. There will be a cocktail party and reception Friday evening, business meetings and panels on Saturday; and by special request, a "raid" on Acres of Books, a huge, quirky, used book store in downtown Long Beach with some rare and wonderful finds. Saturday evening, a cocktail party is scheduled before the banquet. There will be three choices of entree for the banquet: filet mignon with pinot noir sauce, grilled swordfish with pesto sauce and roasted pepper coulis, and pasta primavera for the vegetarians. Price, $50, includes two drink chits for the pre-banquet cocktail party. After that there will be a no-host bar. Following the ceremonies there will be the usual parties. Sunday morning: breakfast with SFWA's lawyer, Tim Whalen, and agent, Richard Curtis; a chance to brainstorm, ask questions, get current advice on publishing matters. The price is $15 for a full breakfast with vegetarian alternatives to the meat dish (please not: this is the cost of the breakfast, not a payment to our lawyer or our agent). The panels and business meeting are open to all members, whether or not you buy a banquet ticket. To attend the two parties only (and not the banquet), the cost is $20; this includes two drink chits. Sheila Finch organized the event. |
