2009 Sturgeon Award Finalists

The finalists for the 2009 Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short science fiction by year were announced on May 20, 2009. The Award is presented during the Campbell Conference Awards Banquet at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas on July 10.

    Paolo Bacigalupi "The Gambler" appeared in Fast Forward 2
    Ted Chiang "Exhalation" appeared in Eclipse 2
    Charles Coleman Finlay "The Political Prisoner" appeared in F&SF, August
    Cory Doctorow & Benjamin Rosenbaum "True Names" appeared in Fast Forward 2
    James Alan Gardner "The Ray Gun: A Love Story" appeared in Asimov's, February
    Kathleen Ann Goonan "Memory Dog" appeared in Asimov's, Apr/May
    Ian McDonald "The Tear" appeared in Empires
    Maureen McHugh "Special Economics" appeared in Del Rey Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy
    Hannu Rajaniemi "His Master's Voice" appeared in Interzone 218
    Michael Swanwick "From Babel's Fall'n Glory We Fled" appeared in Asimov's, February
"26 Monkeys, Also the Abyss" by Kij Johnson would have been a finalist, but was removed from consideration by the author, because she is also a Sturgeon juror.
