Lamda Literary Foundation kicks off their new website by talking to seven different YA experts, including SFWA member and Andre Norton nominee Malinda Lo.

March 1st, 2010; Los Angeles, CA – Today the Lambda Literary Foundation announced the launch of a new online webzine and blog community for LGBTQ writers and readers. The new Lambda Literary webzine will aggregate the best links from LGBTQ and mainstream book news websites and newspapers, feature provocative interviews, under-reported stories, and thoughtful, of-the-moment book reviews and nurture a social community that comments, critiques, links back, twitters, blogs, and interacts both online and in person.

“We’re here; we’re queer; we read. And on March 1st, we’ll be even more visible to the world and to each other.” says Lambda Literary Foundation board member Nicola Griffith. “We’re a community that loves books. We need books. All kinds of books: yaoi and high lit, graphic novels and celebrity tell-alls, heart-wrenching memoir and YA fantasy. We read to save our lives. We write, we edit. We publish, distribute, review, sell, advertise, lend, and buy. And Lambda Literary will now be home for the whole of the brilliantly diverse community that creates and supports our literature.”

“Our goal is to celebrate the successes and triumphs of our book community,” says Lambda Literary Foundation Web Producer Antonio Gonzalez. “All of it: the L, the G, the B, and the T. But of course we still want to have fun with it.”

Lambda Literary Foundation Executive Director Tony Valenzuela agrees. “Not enough queer readers know about the breadth of LGBT books available, both classic and contemporary in every genre imaginable. It’s our job at Lambda Literary to let them know.”

A core team (Griffith in Seattle, Gonzalez in New York, Valenzuela in Los Angeles, and Karina Meléndez, webdev wizard and designer, in British Columbia) built a six-figure website on a four-figure budget.

“We’ve never met,” says Griffith. “We speak different languages (in more ways than one). But we made this website happen, soup to nuts, in six weeks. We built it with love and care and attention–and not much sleep–because it matters.”

Meléndez is passionate on the subject. “Gabriel Celaya wrote that ‘poetry is a weapon loaded with future.’ When I was a teenager, Nicola Griffith’s books gave me exactly what I needed to stay alive in a highly toxic and homophobic environment. I think it is unlikely that news about Ammonite would have reached me in Mexico had the novel not won a Lambda Award in 1993. Sixteen years later, when Nicola told me, ‘I want people to know that, no matter who or where they are, there’s a book for them,’ I had no choice but to participate in making the vision of a website for all of us a reality.”

Some of the stories the new webzine will be launching with:

Cheryl Morgan asks the soul-searching question, “Is There, or Should There Be, Such a Thing as Trans Literature?”

As part of an ongoing Adaptation series, Stephen Rydman takes Tom Ford to task for old-school gay suicidal ideation in A Single Man, and asks: is the film more autobiography than adaptation?

Susan Stinson ponders what happens when lesbian writers venture into forbidden territory. It’s okay for lesbians to write about lesbians–but can a lesbian really write about 18th century Calvinist minister, Jonathan Edwards? Stinson thinks she can

Ten experts give ten quotes on the state of queer teen lit. Young adult fiction with LGBTQ characters and themes is huge in ‘mainstream’ YA circles. We asked ten writers to give us the skinny.

Lambda Literary Foundation’s new webzine can be found at lambdaliterary.org.

About Lambda Literary Foundation
LLF’s programs include: the Lambda Literary Awards, the Writers’ Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, and our website, www.LambdaLiterary.org.

The international bestselling novel Plague Year invaded France this week with the first title in Jeff Carlson’s trilogy of sci fi thrillers selling for a “solid” advance to Bibliotheque Interdite, described by literary agent Cameron McClure as “a young but dynamic publishing house that works with Games Workshop. They are growing and becoming more and more important in the fiction market.”

Bibliotheque Interdite has specialized in game tie-in Warhammer novels with great success. This summer, their new Eclipse line will debut with other media-friendly titles such as the Deathstalker books by Frank Frazetta, Steve Savile’s Silver, R.E. Howard’s Conan, and Carlson’s Plague Year, which deals with the accidental release of a nanotechnology prototype that devours all warm-blooded lifeforms below elevations of 10,000 feet.

Here in the U.S., the second novel in Carlson’s trilogy, Plague War, was a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award, while the third title, Plague Zone, was Ace/Penguin’s lead paperback for December 2009 and received front-of-store displays in Barnes & Noble and other chains.

To date, the Plague Year novels have also sold in Germany, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Spain, where “La Plaga” quickly became a bestseller as Minotauro’s lead hardcover for September 2008.

Readers can find free excerpts of the trilogy on Carlson’s web site at www.jverse.com along with tour dates, videos, contests, and more, including a trivia challenge in which winners will be allowed to name a character after themselves or a friend in one of his upcoming novels.

(National)-Book View Café, a digital publishing cooperative for professional authors, today announced it has partnered with Smashwords to distribute Book View’s growing ebook catalog, including titles by from such well known authors as Ursula K. LeGuin, Vonda N. McIntyre, Sarah Smith, Seanan McGuire and Laura Anne Gilman.

”Smashwords is taking a truly dynamic approach to ebooks,” said Book View Café Project Manager Sarah Zettel. “From the beginning, BVC has promised readers the books they want, when they want them. Smashwords’ commitment to delivering multi-format ebooks to a wide variety of major retail outlets and mobile smart phone platforms will help us keep that promise.”

A unique online venture, the authors of Book View Café are all veterans of the publishing world, having worked with some of the most famous print publishers including Penguin Books, St. Martin’s Press, Tor Books, and Simon and Schuster. Book View Café will make the majority of their current ebooks available through Smashwords’ bookstore, affiliates, and retail distribution partners.

This will include titles by award-winning and bestselling authors such as Sarah Zettel, Sylvia Kelso, Steven Harper, Pati Nagle, and Chris Dolley.

Smashwords currently publishes and distributes over 6,500 original ebooks from 3,000 independent authors and 100 small independent publishers. The service launched in May 2008 with a focus on self-published authors, and then in May 2009 expanded its offerings to support publishers as well. Smashwords distribution relationships with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Kobo (formerly

ShortCovers) will ensure BVC titles are available for online reading to a worldwide audience, across both dedicated ebook reading devices and mobile smart phones.

”We’re pleased to work with Book View Café to help connect their authors with the rapidly expanding audience of ebook readers,” said Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords. “Book View authors join a growing roster of professionally published Smashwords authors who are leveraging the power of ebooks to publish and distribute their out-of-print, reverted rights and unpublished works as ebooks.”

In addition to its authors’ personal offerings, Book View Café will contribute their newly formed Book View Press titles, ROCKET BOY AND THE GEEK GIRLS, an anthology of rare and classic science fiction stories and THE SHADOW CONSPIRACY, an all-new steampunk collection, to the Smashwords catalog. A fantasy anthology, DRAGON LORDS AND WARRIOR WOMEN, and a book on writing and the publishing industry are being planned for release in early 2010, and will be made available through Smashwords.

All Book View Café content is DRM-free at the Book View Café web site http://bookviewcafe.com as well as at Smashwords (http://smashwords.com).

About Book View Cafe

BOOK VIEW CAFE came together in 2008 around a group of authors with a simple aim: to use the Internet to bring their work directly to their readers. It was already clear that a revolution was coming to the publishing industry and these authors wanted to help shape its course.

Drawing on a collective century’s worth of experience in the publishing industry, the authors created an online space where readers can browse and discover new authors and titles alongside current favorites. Aware that the Internet demands variety, the site features fresh fiction every day on the front page, a feat made possible by the extensive list of material available to over thirty professional authors.

Since its launch, Book View Café has experienced a steady growth in readers and in author-members.

The Cafe now receives over 700,000 hits every month. The author blog has also seen increasing popularity since its launch, drawing a further eight to nine thousand hits per month. You can visit the website at www.bookviewcafe.com.
