The World Wide Web Consortium is the first place to look for information about Web page creation. You'll find HTML specifications, an excellent validator, W3C open-source software, a linkchecker, and much, much more.

Bare Bones HTML

A Beginner's Guide to HTML at NCSA.

Browser-safe colors. Please remember, as you use these colors, that "browser-safe" means they'll work on most browsers, but that's no guarantee that they won't produce unpleasant results on some. Everything depends on the user's hardware, and you can't know what that will be. The safest bet is always to use a white background or a pale-colored background gif behind text; otherwise some people will have trouble reading it.

Kira's Web Toolbox contains many useful goodies. There are exclusive tools, including a 216 color square which, when you click a color, will return the hex value. There are Webmaster tools, Sysadmin tools, books, and reference: a wealth of information, all free.

Lynx is the text-based browser in most common use.

Lynx-Me Lets you see what your pages will look like in Lynx, a text-based browser, without either downloading or using a public access version.

Spyglass HTML Validator 1.0 is a Win95 freeware HTML validator you can download, so you can validate your code (check it to make sure there are no errors) right on your own hard drive, and correct it before you upload it. Spyglass no longer supports this validator, but it's still available and it still works.
