From the back cover:
An alarm shrilled . . .
"Come on, Mama!" Brianna shouted.
A rattling deluge of hissing sand erupted against the outside wall of the prefab. The floor of the cubicle tilted crazily and Brianna was thrown violently off her feet. Crumpled inertly in a corner beneath her thrashing mother, Brianna watched while the roof tore away with a wrenching screech.
They clung to each other in mindless terror, praying for it to end. Then above her mother in the void where the ceiling had been, Brianna saw an immense vortex of green wind. It loomed overhead, bending like a sapling. A separate arm of whistling wind came down at them. Her mother was ripped cruelly from her grasp and flung away into the sinister belching dust. Within the howl of the primeval wind Brianna screamed. Then the arm of wind returned, and scooped her up, too...

Sales Oddities
"End of the Line," sf short story sold to Midnight Zoo, Oct. 1992. Withdrawn in April, 1993, when publisher Jon Herron decided he didn't have to honor fiction contracts he'd already issued; he'd still publish your work, but wouldn't pay for it. Since he was only paying me a whopping $12 and 2 contributor's copies for a 7000 word story, the added indignity of being paid nothing/nada/zip was too much. Midnight Zoo bit the dust soon afterwards. Came close a couple times but never have re-sold EotL. Anybody interested in space opera (brave alien and feisty female human cop trapped on space station w/monster from brave alien's home world)?
"Noodle You, Noodle Me" accepted (no contract, no payment) by Oklahoma Emmy-winning author/editor Russell Bates in Feb. 1992 for his Harper/Collins, Native American-themed antho Horseman, Starman. Something went wrong somewhere, and "Noodle" was withdrawn and sold to Asimov's.
