So you'd like to become a
SFWA Musketeer
"Fortius Stylus Gladio, Sed Prudens Ambos Portat"
(The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword, But A Wise Woman Carries Both)
We dress up in flamboyant costumes and put on a show at science fiction conventions when enough of us will be present. The events involve some acting and some fencing, with the emphasis on entertaining the audience, not competing for Best Fencer.
A word about egos. We are writers. We all have egos--nice big healthy ones. No one expects a SFWA Musketeer to become meek, humble, and self-sacrificing. However, the Musketeer founders have agreed to pour their egos into their writing, their costumes, and their fencing training, and to wait until an event to actually attack one another. Musketeer Qualifications: SFWA Musketeers must be SFWA members in good standing, and either having fencing experience or be willing to learn between now and then. They must be willing to dress up and show off in public, including looking a little ridiculous if the script calls for it. They must be willing to abide by the safety regulations our safety marshals set down, and agree to signing some niggly pieces of paper the lawyers want. Also important are a sense of humor (big enough to include a sense of the ridiculous), and agreement with the basic goals. We have some openings left for SFWA Musketeers.
Auxiliary Qualifictions:
SFWA members who have no interest in fencing "onstage," or non-SFWAns who think it might be fun to get involved, are welcome to join as auxiliariy troops. Auxiliary troops may be onstage as non-Musketeer "characters", and will also help with setting up, tearing down, fetching and carrying, and keeping track of things.
Again, sense of humor, flexibility, and a firm grasp of the
goals of the project are important qualifications. Experience
in fencing, theater (both onstage and backstage) and related
areas especially needed. Auxiliary troops will be eligible for a patch,
and there are other benefit packages now being worked on by the staff.
We have openings left for auxiliary troops.
