Clothing

First, an official Policy Statement from our Fearless Leader: "Don't rush out and beg/borrow/buy/have made your official fighting uniform yet. We will eventually--in good time and plenty of it before you need 'em--have all the specs done and available. Early birds may get the wrong worm."

For a look at authentic period clothing, try The Maneige Royal, by Antoine De Pluvinel. Pub. by J.A. Allen 1989 London (translated edition) based on an edition published in 1626, by Gottfried Muller in Braunschweig, Germany. ISBN 0-85131-452-X

It will cost you. Try looking at some of our scans from the book. Beware--it's slow loading!

The Deva Lifewear's Buccaneer shirt (www.devalifewear.com/mm5) is vaguely correct (some good point lace at the collar and cuff will solve all questions of correctness) and of very good quality. It's also of sufficiently heavy material that it won't get ripped up the first time a sword tip plough across your biceps. Deva's toll free order line is 1-800-222-8024.

J. Peterman's also has a banded collar Ecuadoran shirt for $29.00 to which can be attached a big 17th century collar (with requisite lace, of course). J. Peterman's number is 1-800-231-7341.

Fencing Manuals

Three Elizabethan Fencing Manuals, edited by Jackson, pub. by Scholars' Reprints.
This volume has photocopy facsimiles of the diGrassi, Saviolo, and Silver fencing manuals from the late 16th century. DiGrassi is easiest to use, and Saviolo is probably the most useful, but is very hard to follow. There's a web site (URL currently unknown) that has a complete reprint of at least the Saviolo manual. Be careful, they omitted a move or two when they reset the text.

Renaissance Swordsmanship : The Illustrated Use of Rapiers and Cut-And-Thrust Swords , by John Clements, ISBN 0873649192
(Currently backordered at Amazon, but try elsewhere.) Based, so the author says, on research in period manuals, it covers technique in smallsword, two swords, cloak and sword, and other fun techniques. Full of useful diagrams.
