Denton and Morgan win Sturgeon and Campbell Awards

| The winner of the John W. Campbell Award for best science fiction novel
of 2004 is Market Forces by Richard K. Morgan. The winner of the
Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short science fiction in 2004
is "Sergeant Chip" by Bradley Denton..
The juried award results were announced July 8 at the University of
Kansas. Denton was present to receive his award. Morgan was not.
The second and third place finishers for the Sturgeon Award were "The
Voluntary State" by Christopher Rowe and "Mere" by Robert Reed. The second
and third place finishers for the Campbell Award were The Time Traveler's
Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and Air by Geoff Ryman. |

The awards were preceded by a banquet and the showing of a video tape of
a James Gunn interview with the late Theodore Sturgeon.
Christopher McKitterick announced that the 2006 Weekend may include
inductions in a new Fantasy Hall of Fame.
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame inductions took place during
the Campbell Conference from 1996 to 2004. The name was changed to the
Science Fiction Hall of Fame when it moved to Seattle following last year's
ceremony.
