******************************************************** Sawyer and Bacigalupi win Campbell and Sturgeon Awards ********************************************************
Paolo Bacigalupi, Robert J. Sawyer The Campbell and Sturgeon Memorial Awards were presented Friday, July 7, 2006 at a banquet at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The winner of the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short science fiction story of 2005 was Paolo Bacigalupi for "The Calorie Man." The winner of the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the best science-fiction novel of 2005 was Robert J. Sawyer for Mindscan. Both authors were present to accept their awards. Also announced were the 1st and 2nd runners up for both awards. Robert Charles Wilson's Spin was first runner up for the Campbell Award, and Ian R. Macleod's The Summer Isles was second runner up. (these were erroneously reversed when first reported) First runner up for the Sturgeon Awards was Ian McDonald's "The Little Goddess." Kelly Link's "Magic for Beginners" was second runner up. The Sturgeon and Campbell Awards are both juried awards. The Campbell Award has been presented since 1973. The Sturgeon Award has been presented since 1987.
