Michael Gilbert (1947-2000)

Artist, author and publishing professional, Michael Gilbert, died Monday, August 14 of complications following open-heart surgery. Gilbert, age 53, was married to Sheila Gilbert, co-publisher of DAW Books, for 29 years.

Mr. Gilbert was DAW Books’ first reader for unsolicited submissions, and provided artwork and maps for many DAW titles. He co-authored The Day of the Ness with Andre Norton, as well as many articles on military history. He also created gaming rules for miniature figure gaming, and was an avid collector of military artifacts. In July 2000, his first short story, "The General's Bane" (co-authored with his wife), was published in Civil War Fantastic edited by Martin H. Greenberg.

There will be a Memorial Service at 1:00pm on Thursday, August 17th, at Flynn & Sons Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, New Jersey. Mrs. Gilbert requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mike’s name to either The American Diabetes Association or The Humane Society.
