Elizabeth Wein Takes Pride in The Lion Hunter

Cover for The Empty Kingdom Cover for The Lion Hunter

Elizabeth Wein's fourth novel for young people, The Lion Hunter, was released 14 June 2007 by Viking Children's Books in New York. The novel, already well-received with three starred reviews, continues a gripping series that blends Arthurian legend with the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. A trip to Ethiopia in 2004 helped Elizabeth to create the landscape and atmosphere that makes up the exotic setting of her books. The Lion Hunter is the first of a two-part sequence called The Mark of Solomon; the second half, The Empty Kingdom, is due out in Spring 2008.

Elizabeth, an American, has lived in Scotland for nearly eight years. In addition to her four novels, she has also written and published numerous short stories for teens during that time. The latest of these, "Always the Same Story," appears in a new collection edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. The collection, called The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales, is lavishly illustrated by Charles Vess. It is also published by Viking.

Elizabeth is probably best known for her first novel, The Winter Prince, a dark and intense tale of sibling rivalry between King Arthur's legitimate and illegitimate sons.
