Books From August 2007
Seen Through the
SFWA Circulating Book Plan

Compiled by Michael H. Payne

Abraham, Daniel: A Betrayal in Winter (Tor, Aug07)

I really, really, really liked the first book in this series, and I liked this one even more: it seemed more focused somehow, more concerned with telling the story now that he's already established his wonderful strange world. I mean, he's taken the whole idea of "magic" and given it a couple spins that make me just grin every time I think about it, the way its so very practical and rooted in proper grammar and all. He's got two more seasons to go, and I for one can hardly wait!

Caine, Rachel: Thin Air (Roc, Aug07)

I remember reading and enjoying the first two books of this series, but somehow numbers three through five seem to have slipped through my net since this here is number six. Fortunately, it starts off with the main character stricken by quite a thorough state of amnesia, so I get caught up on events at the same time she does. The amnesia turns out to be a more than just a convenience of the narrative structure, too, so that's nice, and the book displays all the things I liked about the previous ones. Good stuff.

Gould, Steven: Jumper: Griffin's Story (Tor, Aug07)

It's always nice to see a writer whose stuff I like making a larger splash in the world. And with Gould's first book on the verge of release as what they always seem to call a major motion picture, he's gone back to the milieu of Jumper and has written, well, not a sequel exactly, nor really a parallel story along the lines of Orson Scott Card's "Shadow" books, nor even an adaptation of the movie's screenplay. Whatever it is, though, like all of Gould's work, it's a darn fine book.

Haldeman, Joe: The Accidental Time Machine (Ace, Aug07)

This one has already made the Nebula ballot, so it sure doesn't need me recommending it. All I'll say, then, is that I don't much care for time travel stories--their plots are usually built on such circular logic that, when I get to the end, I'm left feeling that the whole thing was both overly contrived and essentially inconsequential--but Haldeman's writing and characters as always carried me through. A lot of good stuff here.

Schroeder, Karl: Queen of Candesce (Tor, Aug07)

Another 2nd book in a series, but this one an absolute, full-throated swashbuckling space opera. It's another one where the setting looms large, and again, now that he's gotten me used to Virga, the space balloon thousands of miles wide, he can focus in on the story and the characters and give me a rip-snorter of a yarn. Read the first one if you haven't yet, then move right on to this one.
