Books From January 2008
Seen Through the
SFWA Circulating Book Plan

Compiled by Michael H. Payne

Briggs, Patricia: Iron Kissed (Ace, Jan08)

Some authors, when I open the mail to find a new book by them, it's time to clear the rest of the day's calendar and settle in to read. Briggs is one of those authors for me, and that's saying something since most of the recent rash of ultra-hardboiled "vampire/werewolf/supernatural angst" novels, I can really do without. She makes her characters into people with lives--even if those lives have gone on for centuries--and her setting isn't a hopeless world of unremitting darkness and pain. I recommend the whole series.

And the rest of the month:

Asaro, Catherine: The Ruby Dice (Baen, Jan08)

Baxter, Stephen: Navigator (Ace, Jan08)

Berg, Carol: Breath and Bone (Roc, Jan08)

Bishop, Toby: Airs and Graces (Ace, Jan08)

Campbell, Jack: The Lost Fleet: Courageous (Ace, Jan08)

Flint, Eric, ed.: Ring of Fire II (Baen, Jan08)

Galenorn, Yasmine: Darkling (Berkley, Jan08)

Green, Simon R.: The Unnatural Inquirer (Ace, Jan08)

Hendee, Barb & J.C.: Child of a Dead God (Roc, Jan08)

Martin, George R. R., ed.: Inside Straight (Tor, Jan08)

Palmatier, Joshua: The Vacant Throne (DAW, Jan08)

Swanwick, Michael: The Dragons of Babel (Tor, Jan08)
