Greenberg, Martin H. & Coleman, Loren L., eds.: Wizards, Inc. (DAW, Nov07)
A very high percentage of good stories here. I'll pick three to mention--"A Different Way into the Life" by Jay Lake, "Disaster Relief" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and "Theobroma" by Diane Duane--but there were only a couple that made me scratch my head at the end and wonder what was going on. Maybe the best of last year's batch of DAW anthologies, though I'd really hafta think about that...
McDevitt, Jack: Cauldron (Ace, Nov07)
Now, I have a great deal of affection for McDevitt's books. They're these bigger-than-life, pulpy, space adventure novels with a few deeper things on their minds, and that's all for the good. But, well, the characters always seem to do at least one really dumb thing in the course of each story. The dumb thing in this book almost ruined the ending for me, but overall, I still enjoyed it. And, hey, it's wrapping up the big mystery of the series, so if you've read the others, go get this one.
Shinn, Sharnon: Reader and Raelynx (Ace, Nov07)
This one's the 4th book in Shinn's "Twelve Houses" series, but I can recall so many plotlines from the previous books, I had to look twice, thinking this must surely be the sixth or seventh book. A lot happens when she tells a story, in other words, and pretty much all of it grabs me right from the start. She's pretty much gotten all the characters we met in the first scene of the first book settled and has dealt with all the bad guys, so I dunno: this might be the last one. Read 'em all if you like your fantasy romantic, colorful and exciting.
Shusterman, Neal: Unwind (Simon & Schuster, Nov07)
Two caveats: first, I got this book from my local library rather than through the Book Plan, and second, Shusterman is in my writing group. Both of those aside, though, this is first-rate YA SF of the "if this goes on" variety. Shusterman not only thinks through the ins-and-outs of his world, he populates it with characters easy to care about and keeps the story moving along at a terrific pace. A fine, fine book.
