Greenberg, Martin H. & Hines, Jim C., eds.: Heroes in Training (DAW, Sep07)
Another theme anthology, and Robin Wayne Bailey's "The Children's Crusade," a Nebula nominee this last go-round, is pretty fun--mostly for me, though, 'cause it reminds me so much of Steven Gould's various Jumper stories. But the story here that really sprang out at me was Vera Nazarian's wonderful return to her Compass Rose universe, "The Three Names of the Hidden God." Some other good stories, too, make this yet another fine DAW anthology from last year.
Harris, Charlaine & Kelner, Toni L.P., eds.: Many Bloody Returns (Ace, Sep07)
I've been surprised several times the last few years to find myself enjoying a theme anthology of vampire stories, this one focusing on vampire birthdays. I mean, yes, most of the stories here have a certain similarity, but that just makes the ones that take chances stand out more: editor Kelner's "How Stella Got Her Grave Back," Jeanne C. Stein's "The Witch and the Wicked," and the reliably interesting Tanya Huff with "Blood Wrapped."
