LOS ANGELES — Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America will hold this year’s annual business meeting at the 2009 World Fantasy Convention in San Jose, Calif.
The SFWA business meeting will be held the morning of Oct. 31 at the Fairmont Hotel, 170 South Market Street in San Jose. A light continental breakfast will be served to SFWA members beginning at 8:00am, with the meeting commencing at 8:30am and running to 9:30am. The business meeting was scheduled so as not to conflict with regular WFC programming.
“We are very grateful to World Fantasy for reaching out with this offer of aid,” said SFWA Secretary Mary Robinette Kowal. “As one of the most important annual conventions, a large number of our members already planned to attend. This partnership is a win-win for everyone, and allows us to honor the ‘Fantasy’ element of our mission.”
SFWA will not hold a business meeting during the upcoming 67th World Science Fiction Convention in Montréal, Québec. Massachusetts law—under which SFWA is incorporated—precludes meetings outside of the United States. Normally, the business meeting would be during a North American Science Fiction Convention, but NASFiCs are only scheduled when Worldcon occur outside North America.
About World Fantasy Convention
The World Fantasy Convention is an annual gathering of professionals, collectors and others interested in the field of light and dark fantasy art and literature. The number of attending memberships are limited, and usually sell out in advance of the start of the convention. The World Fantasy Awards are presented during a Sunday afternoon banquet.
Celebrating Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday, the 2009 World Fantasy Convention will be held Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in San Jose, Calif. For additional information, visit ://www.worldfantasy2009.org/

Montreal – There will indeed be a writers’ workshop at Anticipation 2009, Worldcon, in Montreal this August. The workshop sessions are two hours long and scheduled at various times on various days.
Entry fee is $20 plus $2.58 in taxes, Canadian. This cost is to defray costs of the workshop. You pay the fee when you’re notified that you have a slot and not before. Instructions will be emailed to entrants directly.
There are a limited number of slots available and right now, it’s one slot per customer, no multiple submissions.
Maximum length is 10,000 words, including any synopsis of the rest of a novel, novella, etc. Shorter lengths, including flash, are fine, even encouraged, but only one story.
Genre: science fiction, fantasy, horror, the usual for a Worldcon
Type: short story or novel excerpt
Language: English or French
We will also consider entries for critique of non-fiction critical essays on the subject of genre, same length requirements.
The entries will be distributed in advance so the window to get space in the workshop won’t be open for very long.
Official details will be forthcoming on the Anticipation website (http://www.anticipationsf.ca) and through other avenues of communication. You can also email writers-workshop@anticipationsf.ca directly to request a slot now.

Anticipation, the 67th Worldcon, will be held from August 6th – 10th in Montreal. SFWA is looking for volunteers to help out in three different areas.

The Dealer’s Room
Once again, SFWA will have a table in the dealers room. SFWA will be selling books, T-shirts, and memberships at the table. We need SFWA members to help staff the table when the dealers room is open. If you can volunteer some of your time, whether an hour here or there, or longer, we’d love to have you help out. We know that you probably don’t have your panel schedule yet, but feel free to express your interest and we can work out the details of what shift is convenient for you after schedules are sent out.
Dealers Room hours are: Thursday, 1-7, Friday-Sunday 10-6, and Monday 10-4.
Autographing
In addition to working at the table in the Dealers Room, SFWA would like to have authors agree to sit at the table and sign autographs. Again, at this time, just let Steven know if you’re available and willing and we can work out a specific time once you have your schedule in place.
SFWA Suite
Finally, SFWA will be hosting the SFWA Suite once again. If you can help out in the suite, let us know your willingness and availability.
So, if you’re going to be in Montreal, please visit our volunteer center and sign up to help SFWA with one or more of the volunteer opportunities:
