RIP: Joan Aiken (1924-2004)

The Daily Telegraph reports that poet playwright and author, Joan Aiken, passed away Sunday, January 4.

The daughter of Canadian writer, Jessie McDonald Aiken, and Pulitzer Prize winning American poet and writer Conrad Aiken, Joan was born in Rye, Sussex, England, on September 4, 1924.

Aiken wrote 92 novels across several genres, as well as nonfiction, plays, poems and short fiction. Although her work appeals to readers of all ages, she wrote primarily for children, with her best known work in the series beginning with the alternate history fantasy The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Other notable works include A Bundle of Nerves, A Fit of Shivers, A Goose On Your Grave, Night Fall, A Touch of Chill, and The Whispering Mountain.
