To create a story that focuses on character, FOCUS ON THE CHARACTER!

from an essay by Guy Stewart

I'm a husband, father, writer and science teacher and I've been writing since I was 13. Unfortunately, I was 34 before I got published. My main focus is science fiction and writing for children. I'm a member of both Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). My passion is to someday create science fiction books that would do for today's young people what Robert A. Heinlein did for me.

In the meantime, I'm a ninth grade science teacher to pay the bills and I write whenever I can to keep on practicing. My published work includes science fiction in ANALOG and CRICKET, historical and contemporary fiction, curriculum for two PBS science programs, articles for the Minnesota SCBWI bulletin, a book of collected children's science sermons, a children's Christmas musical and various articles in a Minneapolis suburban newspaper.

By no means a rocket scientist, everything I've learned, I've learned the hard way. No Robert A. Heinlein, me -- to publish everything I've ever written. But I've learned and I get published more often now than I did ten years ago. I can also safely say that for the past seven years, my writing has earned me more money that I spent on postage!

So, enjoy my site. I hope you learn something you can use in the article: "Focus On Character" which originally appeared in the March 2001 issue of Cygnet, the newsletter of the Minnesota SCBWI. If you found this helpful, but you have comments or questions email me at gstewart75@hotmail.com .
