SFWA may be a writers’ organization, but we admire and support the work of visual artists as well! Occasionally SFWA has need of art pieces, usually for covers, and we’ll post open calls here. Please share widely – you don’t have to be a member of SFWA to submit!
Rules for Open Calls
For all submissions, please send a portfolio of three (3) samples, along with a link to your main webpage if applicable. We prefer original work, but will consider existing work if it is a strong thematic fit. All works should reflect a science fiction and/or fantasy focus. Please don’t submit work with explicit sexual content, or that contain gore or detailed violence.
We encourage writers from marginalized backgrounds and identities to apply. This is a paid opportunity – don’t self-reject! We value you and your art.
Current Open Calls
NEBULA SHOWCASE:
We’re looking for a full color, wrap-around piece, with non-exclusive usage rights for all editions of the Nebula Showcase volume, as well as the right to use the artwork in marketing and promotional efforts. We encourage pieces that are inspired by the work of our Grandmaster, who is N. K. Jemisin in 2026. Examples from some recent Showcases are below.
ANNUAL REPORT:
We’re looking for a full color piece that can sit comfortably on an 8.5×11 page with cover text. We are asking for non-exclusive usage rights, as well as the right to use the artwork in related marketing and promotional efforts for the publication.
Examples, drawn from the now-retired publication The SFWA Bulletin, are below.
GAMES & COMICS QUARTERLY:
We’re looking for a full color piece that can sit comfortably on an 8.5×11 page with cover text. G&CQ publishes four times quarterly, so any work we accept will be published within a year from acceptance. We are asking for non-exclusive usage rights, as well as the right to use the artwork in related marketing and promotional efforts for the publication. Artwork should be relevant to comics or games, either digital or analog.
