Messenger birds, a conscious spring, and a terracotta effigy summon back home the Dove clan of Austin Creek, a mystical land in Butler County, Alabama. Before the exiled descendants can return to the long-forgotten enclave of their past, they have to complete inner journeys that threaten their understandings of self, marriage, and death.
