I note that none of the nominees are either self published (Amazon or Smashwords) or from online ezines. It looks like science fact has past science fiction. This is really too bad.

I’m afraid you’re mistaken. There are two self-published nominees and eight stories nominated from online magazines. Amazon and Smashwords are not publishers, they’re distributors (excepting Amazon’s actual publishing imprint, 47North).

    Self-published:

The Red: First Light, Linda Nagata (Mythic Island) [Ms. Nagata’s imprint]
‘‘Trial of the Century,’’ Lawrence M. Schoen (www.lawrencemschoen.com; World Jumping)

    Online:

‘‘Wakulla Springs,’’ Andy Duncan & Ellen Klages (Tor.com 10/2/13)
‘‘Burning Girls,’’ Veronica Schanoes (Tor.com 6/19/13)
‘‘Paranormal Romance,’’ Christopher Barzak (Lightspeed 6/13)
‘‘The Litigation Master and the Monkey King,’’ Ken Liu (Lightspeed 8/13)
‘‘In Joy, Knowing the Abyss Behind,’’ Sarah Pinsker (Strange Horizons 7/1 – 7/8/13)
‘‘The Sounds of Old Earth,’’ Matthew Kressel (Lightspeed 1/13)
‘‘Selkie Stories Are for Losers,’’ Sofia Samatar (Strange Horizons 1/7/13)
‘‘Alive, Alive Oh,’’ Sylvia Spruck Wrigley (Lightspeed 6/13)
